Eleanor, my favorite toy

My name is Emma, I’m nearly 17. Seven years ago something terrible happened, which the image of will never be erased from my mind.

I used to live in Manhattan with my parents, my dad is a business man and my mom, well, she was just his wife, a housewife.

On July 23rd, 2005, my dad had a very important presentation to attend to, my mom wanted to come to support him, so they called a babysitter. Before leaving, my dad gave me a doll to cheer me up; “Don’t worry, darling,” he said, “here’s a lovely toy to keep you company.” I named her, Eleanor.

It was late, and my nanny and I went to bed. It was a night I will never forget. My nanny slept in my parents’ room, and at around 3 in the morning, I woke up from the strangest feeling. I shivered, for the first time in my life. I shivered not just from the wind coming through the open window.

I slowly walked to my babysitter’s room to see if she was awake, she was awake alright, I walked into her room and saw her staring into open space; “Magda,” I whispered, “are you alright? I can’t sleep.” I said. She slowly turned her head at me and looked me straight into my eyes, “What are you doing in here?” she whispered back, staring at me with those emotionless eyes. I had my new doll in one hand, I said to Magda; “Well, good night.” and I waved with my doll’s hand at her, and Magda’s hand waved back at me, just the way Eleanor’s did. I waved back again creeped out a little, turned around to go back to my room and took my new toy by the leg, upside down. Magda hung up upside down in the air, one leg sticking out as if held by someone. I screamed, dropped the doll and ran, Magda dropped on her bed like the doll.

In the morning, I took it all for a dream, but still a little scared, I decided to throw Eleanor away (just in case). Nobody ever saw Magda. The truth as I found it out later, Magda was my toy, and my dad to make sure I was safe (a lot of nannies before did horrible things to me) asked a voodoo master to attach their lives together, so if anything happened I could (accidentally) squash or do something to the doll, Magda would feel the same…
